Cadence Giersbach creates site-specific painted environments of gardens and interiors. Her work conflates experiences of intimacy and exclusion, fantasy and memory. Plastic Replicating Garden was a series of fourteen eight-foot-tall wooden panels, hinged to form screens. These panels were upholstered in white vinyl and painted with scenes of a duplicating and dissolving English garden.
The images in Plastic Replicating Garden were derived from a traditional English garden replete with box hedges and trimmed topiary. In a formalized garden a sense of controlled, interior order was imposed on an exterior, uncontrolled space.
