Cecily Brown describes her lush paintings as "highly charged, frenzied spectacles involving orgiastic rituals with an element of black comedy." The works are contemporary bacchanals in their celebration of lust and greed for immediate pleasure. In their emphasis on groups of interlocking figures and their scenes of high drama they draw on the tradition of Old Master painters like Poussin and Goya. Rather than naked human bodies, however, Brown’s paintings are teeming with cuddly bunnies, creatures generally more associated with innocence than with extreme debauchery.
