Deitch Projects was pleased to present Phiiliip's project Divided by Lightning, exhibited in Deitch Project's Williamsburg space, in conjunction with the launch of his new CD, Next Album. For this new album, Phiiliip did much more than just releasing his music: activating his expanded community of artists, friends, fans, and fellow musicians, he released himself in elaborated form. Rather than letting a publicity machine sculpt him in accordance with the strict dictates of the predefined pop market, Phiiliip gently entrusted himself to the masterfully crafty hands of over fifty friends and admirers, giving them free rein to have their way with him. Collaborating with the invited artists at the early stages of the album's development, Phiiliip presented an array of reflected identity in the responses produced by the artists. Artworks included anything relating to the content of the CD, be it inspired by/ responding to/ commenting on/ or utilizing the CD's meat.
