Deitch Projects is pleased to present an exhibition of all 131 of Jason Schmidt’s artist portraits featured in his new book, Artists, recently published by Edition 7L / Steidl. A wide range of artists are included in the project from established figures such as Marina Abramovic and Ed Ruscha to emerging artists like Dan Colen and Jim Drain. Schmidt has a remarkable ability to portray not just the image of the artist but also the world of the artist. Like photographers of previous generations, known for their artist portraits such as Man Ray, Hans Namuth, Ugo Mulas and Gianfranco Gorgoni, Schmidt’s photographs are more than just portraits. They provide remarkable insights to how the artists approach their work. Each of the 131 artist portraits exhibited is its own self-contained world, specific to the artist’s mythology and methodology that inform and ultimately become their art.
