Buick Building, Design District, Miami
Deitch Projects and Paper Magazine presented SIGNARAMA, a project with Steve Powers and Studio Gangster for Art Basel Miami Beach 2007. SIGNARAMA was a sign shop built originally in Coney Island and relocated to the Design District with a staff of the finest artists and sign mechanics working with text anywhere. They may be at odds on the merits of signs and art, but both sign mechanics and artists agree on the merits of a fast hand, a good eye, and a nice brush. Deitch Projects and Paper Magazine invited attendees to visit the shop and participate in a symposium of signage and verbage featuring works by Chris Johanson, Jo Jackson, Barry McGee, Matt Wright, Justin Green, and many more. A group of Steve Powers’ famous awning pieces were installed on the façade. Signs displayed and created at SIGNARAMA were available for purchase.
Steve Powers is inspired by the relationship between artistic invention and commercial signage. His work utilizes graffiti tags and advertising logos to explore the human emotional experience: love, hate, desire, insecurity, frustration, and revelation.
