In their apartment under the shadow of the bridge a couple is preparing for a night in Manhattan. Looking at herself in the fading light in her mirror the young woman hears her boyfriend whistling in the bathroom. She pauses for a second before she turns the light on. In his turn, the young man pauses for a second in the doorway and watches her back, noticing the down that holds the sweat between her panties and her blouse.
Now they are on a train and the young woman lets her eyes drift down as she relaxes in the air conditioning and the rolling sounds. She shakes her head to clean her mind and notices the shape of his knee through his pants. Both of them are looking forward to a slow walk from the subway station to the gallery.
Shower in the Dark is the name of the performance they are going to attend, attracted by little more than the urge to stand close to others like themselves. A shared restlessness, the very definition of something you can’t put your finger on, provides the pull. There is often so much titillation in these rooms, and so little of it is available to the people who are there. In the hope that tonight will prove more generous, they show up.
This performance was given in Vienna first and now New York appears to have let its guard down enough to host it. The sexuality in this piece isn’t easy to describe in terms common in either town. It’s not all blood and talcum powder like the Vienna aktionists would have it, nor forced and tawdry like on the old forty second street or on the old lower east side. Even less is it like the seemingly airbrushed without an airbrush and listless nudity we see today.
It’s a little more fun.
