Self Portraits: A Vogue Portfolio was an exhibition of self portrait paintings by leading women artists. This exhibition presented paintings created for a ten-page portfolio commissioned by Vogue for its December 2003 issue along with additional works.
The exhibition contained work by a number of today’s most celebrated women artists. The fourteen artists featured in the show were: Vanessa Beecroft, Cecily Brown, Rachel Feinstein, Jacqueline Humphries, Sophie Matisse, Wangechi Mutu, Elizabeth Peyton, Susan Rothenberg, Dana Schutz, Amy Sillman, Kiki Smith, Charline von Heyl, Sue Williams, Su-en Wong, and Lisa Yuskavage. Most of the work was created especially for this project. Many of the artists had never previously made a self portrait; others had tried it only once or twice before. Each of these contemporary artists approached a traditional art form in her own way, with innovative and surprising results.
The Vogue portfolio and accompanying exhibition were curated by Dodie Kazanjian, the editor-at-large who covers the art world for Vogue magazine. This commission was a continuation of Vogue’s long commitment to the coverage of new art. The exhibition was of particular interest at the time because of the strong revival of figurative painting and the renewed interest in issues of self-identity.
