Our Best World was a painting installation by Alexander Vinogradov and Vladimir Dubossarsky. Thirty-eight canvases from the endless painting on which they were constantly working were installed in a continuous line around the perimeter of the gallery. In their endless picture, one subject transformed itself into another, night changed into day, and winter into summer.
Vinogradov and Dubossarsky try not to invent anything; they just watch and listen to everything occurring around them. The subject of the work was put together from scraps of the real and the imagined, from concrete and virtual space, from personal experience and from the mass media. The imagery ranged from the commonplace to quotations from classical and avant-garde art. The characters in the paintings were burlesque and cinema stars, top models, politicians, and animals. Our Best World was formed from this kaleidoscope. Some people found the work to be sophisticated parody, others found it foolish and naïve. Another group found it harmonious and comforting. The artists left it without commentary. The spectators possessed all rights to interpret.
Vinogradov and Dubossarsky’s synthetic approach to painting fuses elements from many different formal and iconographic sources such as Socialist Realism, Sots Art, Soviet magazines of the 1950s, contemporary Russian advertising, and international pop culture. Moving from one subject to another, the images seduced the viewer with an irresistible promise of enjoyment.
