Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx
"Memorial to a Marriage" is carved out of Carrara marble and designed in the manner of a nineteenth-century mortuary sculpture. This over-life-size figurative monument depicts the artist and her partner, artist Deborah Kass, in a loving embrace. Combining elements from nineteenth-century American ideal sculpture and Italian seventeenth- and eighteenth-century sculpture with new twenty-first century technologies in stone carving, Cronin updates traditional forms with contemporary sexual content. Cele-brating in death a marriage that could not then be made legal in life, Cronin subverts this sentimental form and breathes new spirit into it.
The statue is installed on the couple’s plot at “America’s Père Lachaise,” Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx. Woodlawn is the country’s premiere example of the garden
