"INFLIGHT!" was a takeoff of the standard airline magazine you might find in any airplane seat pocket, complete with air-sickness bag, safety instructions, flight routes, and feature articles. But it broke a basic convention of sky reading by focusing on the history of airline hijacking. An obsessively researched collection of articles took the place of the seamlessly peaceful world of showbiz chats and international recipes usually provided to relax air passengers. By sourcing thirty years of news archives on the subject, Johan Grimonprez also subtly scrutinized the media’s influence in shaping our understanding of world events, as he reported that the hijacker character had virtually vanished from our screens.
To launch the magazine at Deitch Projects, Grimonprez created an inflight lounge, with comfortable furniture, coffee, and an audio library from which visitors could choose their own movie sound track. A jetwalk corridor of iconography led visitors into the main gallery, where a giant wall map indicated the history of skyjack and spacenap routes.
“INFLIGHT!” was presented a year before the events of 9/11, which forever changed the narrative of airplane hijacking.
