For the past six years, Jason Schmidt pursued an ambitious project: photographing the leading international contemporary artists at work in their studios and during the installation of their work.
More than a series of classic portraits, Schmidt’s emphasis on photographing the artists at work allowed for an intimate insight into the creative process behind the artworks themselves.
Deitch Projects presented an exhibition of all 131 of Jason Schmidt’s artist portraits featured in his new book, Artists, recently published by Edition 7L / Steidl. A wide range of artists were included in the project, from established figures such as Marina Abramovic and Ed Ruscha to emerging artists like Dan Colen and Jim Drain. Schmidt had a remarkable ability to portray not just the image of the artist, but also the world of the artist. Like photographers of previous generations known for their artist portraits, such as Man Ray, Hans Namuth, Ugo Mulas and Gianfranco Gorgoni, Schmidt’s photographs were more than just portraits. They provided remarkable insights on how the artists approached their work. Each of the 131 artist portraits exhibited was its own self-contained world-- specific to the artist’s mythology and methodology that informed, and ultimately became, their art.
Jason Schmidt graduated from Columbia University in 1991 with a degree in Art History. His photographs have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar, The New Yorker, and V Magazine. Schmidt lives and works in New York City. Artists was his first book.
